Is it Time to Lookup Your Cell Phone Number?

I have just come to the realization that I do not remember my own cell phone number.  This is very disturbing because I have had the same cell phone number for many years. The other day, a friend of mine asked me for the number and I ended up spouting a series of numbers as a knee jerk reaction to the request.  Later that evening, my husband called me to tell me that my friend called his cell phone and he wanted to give me the message.

It did not occur to me that I had given my friend my husband’s cell phone number until it happened a second time. “Why does she keep calling you instead of me?” I asked.  My husband said that she seemed to think that he was talking on my cell phone.  Then I remembered spouting the numbers off by heart.  I had given her the wrong numbers.  My brain was just programmed to associate with my husband’s number when I thought of cell phone numbers.

Of course, I called my friend to correct my mistake, but I realized that I had absolutely no idea what my cell phone number really is.  I went through the numbers in my head, but I honestly could not think of the right combination.  As scary as this may seem, it does make perfect sense.  My husband actually did not know my number either.  He has my cell phone number programmed into his phone.  He simply says my name, the phone starts ringing, and I pick up.  He has not had to physically dial or lookup my cell phone number in probably over a year.

As for me, I never call myself so I have never needed to know the number.  I do use my phone quite frequently, but I have had the same cell phone number for about four or five years now.  I gave the number to my friends and family when I first bought a cell phone and my associates from work have had the number also for nearly five years as well.  As often as I use the phone, you would think that I would have the number etched in my memory.  However, since I never seem to need to give my cell phone number out anymore, there is no wonder why I can’t remember it.

I called my friend at her home using my cell phone the other day.  I told her that I needed her to check the caller ID and let me know what my cell phone number is so I could write it down.  She laughed and told me that I already have that information in my cell phone and could simply lookup my cell phone number.  I then explained to her that she could save me a lot of time and aggravation by just giving me the number herself.  Sometimes I believe it is easier to do things the old fashioned way.  So I just added my cell phone number to my address book.  You never know when you may need it some time in the future.
